I visited Specialty Engeneering and they make a mount, but its quite pricey. Has anyone constructed a >system from existing or jy parts? Or does anyone else produce a custom mount that won't cost more than the >price of the tranny? You basicly need to space the 510 tranny mount downward approx 3/4". This is exactly what the custom x-member does. Or, if you have access to a welder, it is fairly simple to cut the "floor" out of the stock x-member and weld in a lower floor to hold the mount lower, reverse crossmember. (doesnt increase exhaust clearance however). Another option is to reverse the crossmember and used 2 short 320i tranny mounts in place of the tall datsun rubber mount. The part # for these is #23 71 1 176 041 (BMW number). Yet another option is to space the entire x-member downward from the body by using longer bolts and thicker spacers between x-member and body, this greatly reduces clearance for the exhaust. For '70+ cars, the Z/ZX tranny requires a long speedo cable because the pinion connects on opposite side, just go to NAPA and order a '68-'69 speedo cable, it is 12" longer than the later cables and reaches fine. You will also need to cut (elongate) the shifter hole in the body tranny tunnel since the shifter is located further back, about 3" to 4". The Z/ZX tranny requires that you use longer bolts between tranny-to-engine block, use the bolts from the donor Z/ZX instead of the stock 510 bolts. When I did my Z/ZX tranny swap, I had the driveshaft shortened by 5.5", you might want to verify that measurement before having the shaft cut.
