That just reminded me of another... I dunno if this has been done many
times by others or not? But anyways...
A good friend chased down a 510 one time looking to see if he could
buy it. The owner said no, it was his daily driver, but kept his number
anyways. I think about 6 months later he gave him a ring. Apparently the
spring went right thru the rear control arm.

It was going to be a "Big job" and he didn't care much about the car
anymore, he was going to find something else. My friend knew my dad was
after one and negotiated a price... I believe it was $75. We went out
there... two friends lifted the car as we pulled the spring out, then I
wedged a 4x4x4 piece of lumber, we had brought, in there (cut with a bow
saw on site!) sat it down, tapped a nail or two into the spring hole,
and went on a 20-30 some km drive home. Next day drove it again to check
things out.

On the way home we stopped at a gas station to put some air in the
tires... Some friends were following us to make sure we made it home ok.
I still remember the look on the other cars faces as we left the gas
station and went over a little bump and the trunk popped right open.
It was actually quite awesome timing. My dads Tracker blew a
transmission the next day, a friday, so all weekend we worked on it. New
control arm, new interior, and new paint job before monday.
Tob. ...Oddly enough, it had a VERY nice ride. I guess the stocker tires
took care of that one.
..How I miss those days.

I thought there'd be more tales of silliness.
Possibly redneck is the wrong moniker.
I must be the loosest screw of the bunch.
My wife reminded of a parts car I once got.
In the early Dime days, when I first learned that
a 510 was actually a sporty car in disguise as
a family sedan, I sought some fenders and
some better wheels for my current ride. A parts
car, about 30 miles from home, was located.
It was a fairly straight 2 door with an immaculate
interior and some 13x7 Enkie wheels that ran
just fine. One major problem - it's battery was
leaky and the right tie rod (radius) tore off from
the severe corrosion and the car was driven into
a curb, slightly bending the steering link.
I show up with a fairly heavy chain and C-shaped
screw together clip, tie the lower control arm to
the front bumper assembly, and "drive her home".
It drove surprisingly well.
