Wolf Creek Racing aluminum CV axle adapters -- CV side
Kurt posted a gallery image in Members Albums
From the album: Strutless Wonder Rear End Upgrade Project
These bolt to your diff stubs and your hub flange. WCR CV kit is $900/pr: http://tinyurl.com/yeb8j7v Kit iincludes cryogenically-treated cro-moly EMPI high hp off-road 100mm Type 2 VW bus CVs w/ shortened high-hp zinc-plated EMPI 4230 axles, boots, all 4 adapters and grade 8 hardware, CV grease, and detailed instructions. Hardware shold be safety-wired. Said to withstand 400hp. Smaller than 930 cv diameter means less chance of interference w/ exhaust and Datsun 510 underbody. Again, these are not genuine Porsche 930 CVs, and are not Porsche or GKN CV joints. -

http://tinyurl.com/ydk5fpc Finally! A solution for those who want to use an STi R-180 LSD under a 510 or a Z-car. $500/pr. I painted the flanges black and have started to install new press-in bolts. Bolt head must be clocked correctly to clear lip when you press them in. I just greased them a bit and used stacks of washers and tightened the nut to 'press' them in. A set of 16 bolts/washers/nuts runs $75+ including my discount at the Nissan dealer. Nissan 510 halfshaft bolts PN 39628-E4100 Nissan halfshaft nuts PN 39627-N3000 Nissan halfshaft washers PN 08915-2401A Nissan 240z halfshaft bolts PN 38228-21000 (D-headed, not hex-head, currently out of stock, but $1.50/bolt cheaper) (Torque to 58 lb-ft once installed) -
Can't use a socket in there--box end works best, 32 ft-lbs

Note lower finned part of cover bulges rearward to give extra 1/3 L fluid capacity. Subaru LSD oil is recommended PN K0305Y0900, $18-25 per liter. -

Note external threads are different from case threads. Ditch the studs and replace with grade 10.9 12x1.75 bolts. Makes install and removal much easier. Torque spec to moustache bar is 52 ft-lbs. -

Masking tape was to protect mounting surface of cover. Note lack of reinforcing ribs. Drain plug is not actually at lowest point. Maybe we're supposed to jack up L side of car to fully drain differential? -
Subaru STi R-180 differential cover vs Perrin R-180 finned cover

Note side placement of drain & fill plugs on Perrin cover. I tapped breather hole for a 1/4 NPT barb fitting to run a catch can. This cover gives 1/3 L more fluid capacity than stock. Perrin part # is PSP-SUS-510. Did they have the 510 in mind? Hmmm. Torque to 22 or 32 ft-lbs, depending on which spec you follow. Drain plugs are 36 ft-lbs. -
From the album: Strutless Wonder Rear End Upgrade Project
Note magnetic drain plug, reinforcing ribs, and steel gastket with 'UP' tab covering breather hole to prevent excess venting of gear oil. Fill plug is also $100+ temperature sending unit. -
STi R-180 Ring gear stamped with 39:11 means it's a 3.54 ratio

From the album: Strutless Wonder Rear End Upgrade Project
39 divided by 11 = 3.54. A 3.90 would have 39:10 stamped into the ring gear. -

Datsun 510 R-160 vs Subaru STi R-180 differential pinion flange
Kurt posted a gallery image in Members Albums
From the album: Strutless Wonder Rear End Upgrade Project
Internal splines are the same, but driveshaft bolt pattern is not. Newer nut includes a flange that elinates the need for a washer. Use loc-tite and 134 ft-lbs. Nut is crimped in 3 places, and is ideally single-use, but should be ok to reuse if you use loc-tite (red or blue). -
From the album: Strutless Wonder Rear End Upgrade Project
This has a bolt pattern that won't bolt to a Dtasun 510 driveshaft. The flange is also too large to pass through the Datsun 510 rear x-member. You need to unbolt this (impact wrench!) and pull it off with a gear puller. Drain the oil 1st or you will have a mess on your hands. Then pull the flange off any Datsun R-160 or R-180 diff or even SUbaro R-160 diff and use it instead. Use loc-tite and torque this to 134 ft-lbs to preserve pinion shaft lash spec. -
Subaru STi R-180 LSD also called 'K' case long-nose R-180
Kurt posted a gallery image in Members Albums
From the album: Strutless Wonder Rear End Upgrade Project
Note the large 'K' cast into the top of the case. This denotes this Hitachi long-nose R-180 as a later unit w/ 115mm carrier (earlier R-180 were 110mm carrier). These are found in 2004 and newer Subaru STIs, with open versions found in the 1984-88 Nissan 200SX. As far as I know, K-case R-180s will all require 27T splined stub axles. Datsun 510 R-160s, Subaru R-160s, and 240z R-180s are all 25T splined stub axles, so they cannot easily be used here. R200s are 29T. More diff info from HybridZ here: http://tinyurl.com/2bj96xp -
From the album: Strutless Wonder Rear End Upgrade Project
R-180 STi differentials come in various flavors: 2004 3.90 (L), 2006 3.54 ®. These have internal circlip retained stubs and are 27T splines. Datsun 510 pinion flange on L, STi pinion flange on R. The STi flange won't fit through rear x-member, has different driveshaft bolt pattern ---- 3.54 ratios are in the 2006 and 2007 STI. 3.90 ratios are in the 2004, 2005, and 2008 STI. Torsen LSDs came in the 2007 and 2008 STI, others are clutch-pack LSDs. These are now $300-$500 used, but you need to solve the 27T splined stub problem before you can install one under your Datsun 510. 510s and Z-cars use 25T splines. Later Nissans use 29T splines. -
