Before the 1972 Road Atlanta 2.5 Challenge event, John Morton, #46, and Peter Brock are joined by BRE guests Jim Fitzgerald in #68 and last-minute sub Sam Posey in the former Mike Downs #35. They qualified in this same order, Morton-Fitzgerald-Posey. Morton won the race, followed by Posey, while Fitzgerald was credited with 10th after engine problems. This photo apparently is by Stan Sholik, who had many photos in "Stainless Steel Carrot". It's from Ray Mann's "Racing Pictorial", Fall 1972

John Morton sits in the BRE "Stainless Steel Carrot" Lotus at Road Atlanta in 1972. After finishing 4th in the F5000 race, the car was heavily damaged when it slid off the wet track and into a barrier, ending BRE's venture into open-wheel racing. Autoweek ad 9/14/1974: "Lotus 70-B Formula A 5000 basket case. Last of the factory Lotus race cars – ex-Follmer, Morton car. Features all latest 70 series modifications & B.R.E. preparation. Car was crashed at Road Atlanta, extensive damage but repairable by competent fabricator. Complete with spares, wheels, tires, including DG-300 Hewland. Price less engines $4500. Pete Brock, El Segundo, CA" This photo apparently is by Stan Sholik, who had many photos in "Stainless Steel Carrot". From the album: Reno Air Races 2009
The highly modified P-51 Mustang "Strega" earned yet another Reno championship, this year flown by 22-year-old Steve Hinton Jr. The aircraft in this album were the fastest piston-powered machines on the planet in 2009, relying on superchargers, nitrous, and aerodynamics to propel their WWII-era designs into 500-mph territory on an 8.4-mile oval course. The three airplanes represent a combined total somewhere around 10,000 horsepower! -

"Voodoo" P-51 Mustang piloted by Will Whiteside ran second in the championship race until forced out by mechanical problems. -
From the album: Reno Air Races 2009
"Rare Bear" Bearcat -- one of the most successful racers over the years at Reno -- is the traditional rival of "Strega" (round motors vs. inlines). Sporting a spectacular new paint scheme for '09, John Penney flew the Bear to 2nd place. -
